Sprained ankle (twisted, torn ankle ligament)

An ankle sprain is a very common injury, but on which may require medical attention or physiotherapy to fully heal.

A sprain occurs when the ligaments of the ankle – the bands of tough tissue connecting the bones of the foot to the bones of the leg – become stretched, torn or damaged. A sudden cockling or twisting of the ankle can pull these ligaments far beyond their normal range of movement, causing the damage. This most commonly happens when a misstep caused the ankle to turn or twist awkwardly (and painfully). However, it can be a result of more serious injury as well.

Symptoms of a sprained ankle

Typical symptoms will include pain, swelling, stiffness and the inability of the joint to bear your weight when walking or standing. It may be accompanied by bruisng or skin discolouation. Only a doctor can say for certain whether you have suffered a sprain or a more serious injury.

Treatment for a sprained ankle

Treatment often included physiotherapy, and may include:

  • Compression of the joint to reduce swelling
  • Elevation of the joint, also reducing swelling
  • Partial immobilisation of the joint with a support brace
  • Avoiding straining the joint
