Tennis and Golfers Elbow

Both Tennis Elbow and Golfers Elbow are ‘overuse injuries’ and both are sometimes referred to as tendinopathies.

Tennis and Golfers Elbow FAQ’s

What are the causes?

Tennis Elbow or lateral epicondylitis occurs as the result of micro injuries to the tendons that join the forearm muscles to the outside of the elbow that are responsible for the extension of your wrists and fingers. Symptoms such as a burning sensation on the outer part of your elbow and, sometimes, pain at night tend to develop gradually and in most cases worsening over weeks and months.

Golfers Elbow or medial epicondylitis effects the tendons of the wrist flexor muscles on the palm side of the forearm. These tendons join the wrist flexors to an area of bone on the inside of the elbow known as the medial epicondyle. Symptoms of Golfers Elbow are a dull ache on the bony bump on the inside of the elbow that might radiate down into the forearm with the pain worsening over time.

What can I do to help?

Resting the effected arm can help especially if you can stop whatever activity has cause the injury in the first place and this combined with taking NSAIDs like Ibuprofen can help to reduce the pain and inflammation.

What are the treatment options for Achilles Tendinopathy?

If resting the injury doesn’t hep then we recommend manual therapy and acupuncture but if symptoms persist then clinical studies suggest that the most effective form of intervention is to use Extracorporeal Shockwave therapy that we administer in clinic .
